Jemima Kirke is an English-American artist, actress, and director best known for her role as Jessa Johansson on the HBO series Girls. She kicked off her career in film in 2005 in the indie short Smile for the Camera and her feature-length debut in Tiny Furniture, as a favor for her childhood friend Lena Dunham.

Kirke was born in Westminster, London to Simon Kirke, the former drummer of the rock bands Bad Company and Free, and Lorraine Kirke, the owner of Geminola, a vintage boutique in New York City. Her mother’s boutique supplied a number of outfits for the television series Sex and the City.
Her mother is Jewish, but her father is of English and Scottish ancestry (the Kirkes are a junior branch of a family of Nottinghamshire landed nobility descended also from the Gibson-Craig baronets). Kirke’s maternal grandmother, Zehava Helmer, was an Israeli former stewardess, and her maternal grandpa, Jack Dellal, was a British businessman of Iraqi-Jewish ancestry. The first of Kirke’s two sisters, Lola Kirke, is also an actress. The other sister is Domino Kirke. She is related to Alice Dellal, a model and photographer, Charlotte Olympia Dellal, a shoe designer, and curator Alexander Dellal.

Kirke accepted several roles on her friends’ projects as she was growing up in the West Village. Kirke played a supporting role in Dunham’s first film, Tiny Furniture following a request from him. Dunham asked Kirke and a few other pals to help out because there wasn’t enough money to hire performers on a contract basis. Kirke didn’t get paid even though the movie was successful. In the HBO series Girls, which ran for six seasons from 2011 to 2017, Kirke and Dunham were reunited. Kirke played Jessa Johansson for the whole run. The dark comedies Ava’s Possessions and The Little Hours featured Kirke in supporting parts. Kirke appeared in Emma Forrest’s 2018 film Untogether alongside her real-life sister Lola Kirke.
In 2011, Kirke made an appearance in the Rival Schools band’s music video for the song “Wring It Out.” Jordan Galland, a friend of hers, directed both this music video and Smile for the Camera. In 2017, she starred alongside Alex Cameron in the music video for his song “Stranger’s Kiss” and in the Saam Farahmand-directed music video for Mick Jagger’s “Gotta Get a Grip.” Kirke starred opposite Zayn Malik in his music video for the song “Dusk Till Dawn” in September 2017.
In the Netflix series Sex Education in 2020, Kirke played Hope, the principal of Moordale Secondary School. It was revealed in 2021 that Kirke had accepted a part in Conversations with Friends, a television series based on the same-named novel by Sally Rooney. In the show, Kirke portrays Melissa, an older, seasoned writer who is captivated by a young couple.
