Phil Black is an Australian International freelance reporter for CNN based in London. He covers stories around Europe since he joined CNN in April 2007. He covered the Russian-Georgian conflict which broke out over separatist South Ossetia in 2008.

Before his deployment to London, Black was CNN International’s Russia reporter based in Moscow. His focus was on a variety of high-profile reports from the area including the infamous arrest and imprisonment of Pussy Riot, the protest punk party. Additionally, he reported on the landslide re-election of Vladimir Putin as president.
Recently, he played a central role in CNN’s coverage of the Ukrainian crisis from his Maidan protests in Kiev to his coverage of violence in Donetsk between pro-Russian separatists and government troops. In addition, he was on the scene at the crashed Flight MH17 crash spot. He broadcasted about the collision and its aftermath. His work on this story and the killing of an anti-government activist in Independence Square was honored twice at the 2014 AIB awards.
In addition, the journalist joined CNN International in April 20017 as a freelance correspondent. He has reported several reports including, the McCartney-Mills divorce trials, the alleged terror attacks in London. He has also reported on the hunt for Madeleine McCann and the massacres in the Finnish classroom. For seven years, he was a reporter at Seven News in Sydney for Australia’s highest-rated news program. Where he covered the Sri Lankan Asian Tsunami before joining CNN.
Black started his career on Australia’s Channel Nine ‘Getaway’ Show as a researcher and worked with strategic logistics for crews filming worldwide travel stories. Additionally, he worked for the channel for five years both as a producer and reporter. He shifted steadily with Seven News into his first correspondent job. Collectively, Black has worked for more than ten years in the media industry.
