He attended the Northwestern University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and a Master’s degree in Journalism. Moreover, he received a second Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Ministry degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.

Prior to becoming a journalist, he led a successful career as an athlete. He was an ALL Big Ten punter at Northwestern between 1994 and 1997, playing in both the 1996 Rose Bowl in Pasadena and taking part in two Big Ten Championships, California and the 1997 Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Besides, he spent time in the NFL as a member of the Seattle Seahawks.
