Her first job in the media was at BBC Radio Merseyside, after which she moved on to BBC North West Tonight, where she reported and read sports news. She joined BBC News as a sports reporter in 2003 and appeared on national bulletins before moving on to the BBC News Channel as a sports news presenter (known at the time as BBC News 24). Also, she went on to lead Sportsday from Germany for the 2006 World Cup. Nugent later worked as a television and radio news correspondent, as well as a BBC News Channel relief presenter.
On Thursday, January 8, 2009, she returned to the BBC News Channel as a sports presenter after maternity leave. Also, she appears as a sports presenter on BBC One’s Weekend News on a regular basis in this role.
Nugent began co-presenting BBC Breakfast as a freelancer in November 2011, standing in for regular hosts when they were unavailable. She has been presenting sports reports alongside Mike Bushell on Breakfast since April 2012, when the show relocated to Media City in Salford. She is the show’s principal relief presenter and co-hosted the show with Bill Turnbull on Christmas Eve 2012.
